The hit series Once Upon A Time celebrates a major milestone this weekend with its 100th episode being broadcast to audiences around the world. I caught up with the man behind the guy liner – Captain Hook, known to us as Colin O’Donoghue and to my husband as ‘that man’.
Colin thank you for agreeing to talk to LadyNicci.com. Tell us, how’s the head after the the 100th episode party. Be honest!
Anytime. Head is ok now! (LadyNicci doesn’t believe him)
You wore an interesting suit. Tell us about the designer and are you foraying into the world of men’s modelling. Or thinking about it?
Haha, I was wearing a Vivienne Westwood suit. Loved it. Not sure about modelling though!
What’s your favourite thing about working on the show? What have you learned since becoming Captain Hook?
I love the fact that I get to play such a complex character. He covers all the emotions! It’s a lot of fun. I’ve learned to put on eyeliner properly!
Dealing with fame and recognition is something you’ve had to deal with since joining Once Upon A Time. When you were dreaming of becoming a full time working actor, did you see this type of recognition or fan fame coming your way?
I never became an actor to become famous. It was the only way I felt able to really express myself. It was always something I felt so passionate about. I don’t feel any different. I just feel lucky to be a part of a fantastic show, playing a wonderful character. We are lucky to have such wonderful fans.
What was the first movie you watched that made an impression on you?
Wow…probably Star Wars.
At what age did you realise you wanted to become an actor?
I was 15 and had some friends in the Droichead Youth Theatre. They roped me into a play and I loved the freedom it gave me to not be me anymore. That was it then!
If you could play any other character in Once Upon a Time who would it be and why?
The Evil Queen! I like her taste in clothes!
What do you like to watch on Netflix?
We have a two and a half year old, so Netflix time is limited, but I love House of Cards.
Music is important in your life. Who do you like to listen to and what’s your favourite song to play on guitar?
I love all types of music. Pearl Jam are my favourite. I like to fiddle with blues music when I play.
Who’s your favourite author and do you get to read much?
Catcher in the Rye is my favourite book. I read a lot of scripts, so don’t get a chance to read as much as I should.
Finally, what’s your favourtie thing about coming home to Ireland, apart from meeting with family and friends. And Guinness?
Just being able to relax at home. While we are shooting it’s incredibly busy, so it’s nice to just sit out the back and have a cuppa!
Once Upon a Time is available on Netflix and is broadcast weekly around the world. LadyNicci is a proud member of the Netflix Stream Team.
